celebrate the gift of people in your life
g
People cross our path and sometimes they are physically present in our lives for a short time. Its the treasure you find when you meet them and the exchange you share that makes the difference. My beloved sister Maria Teresa was one of those special people in my life. An amazing Chicana with a love for her family, cultura and making a difference for others. She was an outstanding trailblazer while in Ar, being a Latina in a fast track to Social Work Masters degree. We are so proud to call her our sister.

She has since left with her mad skills, wicked sense of humor, and kind heart to rejoin her family across the ocean. You are still in our hearts and the ripples from the love you shared will continue to flow. I made this as a gift to remember our time together and it will soon be on its way to you mi hermana.
The traditional symbol of the underrepresented, the Virgin or Tonatizin is at the center of this collage piece, her background is the field of Tejas bluebonnets something we both talked about and missed living in AR. The mother and son represent not only her two beautiful sons but mothers and children that she has helped along her journey. Other traditional imagery of our joint culture are also a part of this work like the Loteria cards, and the dia de los muertos images. Te aquerdas that party or the Chola adventure? We had some good times hermana and I hope to cross paths once again. Mucho carnio, abrazos, y Dios de bendiga!

reach for it
The work is draining to say the least but for now using my words are in front. Later my art will speak louder, volumes even. And the work that will flow through my hands will find the secret places that my words cannot reach. It will be a greater healing not only for those open to receive but for me.
I have many stories to tell and I am growing more pregnant with them each day that passes. And when my gestation period is complete; then I will step through the obsidian looking glass once more. My Spirit will fly like Brother Red Tail and my vision, my charge will be even clearer. I will follow the Red Road with my protector, my guide, my teacher, la Loba and we will share many of life's lessons. Creator has great love for each of us, it’s up to us to reach out, take hold of it, and soar. tlazocamati

Time with the Grandmothers
Unspoken bonds, confiancia run deep, like the roots of a tree. They hold fast in your heart as you reach for new experiences always knowing you have a solid place when the storms hit. Like this Grandmother oak I visited in Houston recently; my roots of home, cultura, familia, and created family run deep and hold fast throughout the years. Weathered buy the tough times but still strong and beautiful and growing. A work of art in constant motion, even when it doesn't feel or look like it, its always growing.
With some of us no words are needed, with a head nod you know you can call on them and they will get your back. Or they will call you on your stuff to make you challenge yourself or push you to grow in new directions, with mucho carino. As a child my refuge was in the highest branches, listening, observing and holding on tight. Just me and the elements.
Then there are the bonds of past generations tangled in your roots. The unspoken struggles, battles fought, and things to overcome. Sharp like a machete in the jungle. The ancestors give us many things but today I wonder what to do with it all. Does it all serve me as it did them or am I to take this generational knowing and create something new?
I struggle with how to honor those that came before and those that will follow me. Do I prune to fit or let it grow with wild abandon; the winds of change are blowing with great strength. I am challenged to let go of the places, things, secrets that made me feel safe; safe like a colcha from Grandmothers linen closet.
Con respecto, I feel it may be time to let go. Transform the fierce warrior, never to forget but to fight the battles with love now. My beloved Loba reminded me that sometimes "life out on the skinny branches" can be the blessing you were praying for, you never know unless you take the risk. So I climb out even further and hold tight. I feel the summer heat, strong winds, and soon the storms will come but I know that siempre, my roots run deep and I am ready to grow in new directions.
mil gracias antepasados, tlazocamati

gifts shared
When I was a child I played under the sewing machine of my mother and grandmother. As they worked on the latest matching dresses for me and my sister; they would toss bits of fabric, thread, and trims to the floor. Never realizing (or maybe they did and were just happy I was occupied) that as I sat below the machine, their discarded bits would fall on me like rain. I would take those bits and fashion them into magic works that would make me smile. I gathered only what called to me; as it is with my work today the materials lead the process. That's how it was with Bryant as with many teachers; they just toss around wisdom and its up to us to pick up what we see as the treasure we need in our life experiences. And then we fashion them into who we are and are becoming.
Gracias Bryant for the rebozos I wrap myself in; gracias for your treasures sometimes wrapped in a tough manner, but a treasure just the same for our Red Road journey.

Storms bring growth
Cedar Falls ARThe days and nights have been filled with rain, storms, thunder, winds, lightening and now flooding. The heavens have been releasing and the atmosphere is filled with electricity. I have also been releasing. Some things I didn't want to let go of but the Universe has a way of flooding you and forcing you down stream whether you want to or not. I still cant swim but the muse of the water beckons so I go and just try not to let the current take me under. Its easy sometimes in transition to only focus on oneself and forget that there are others around you who may also feel the current. The atmosphere is charged and keeps me in the present moment instead of trying to relive the past. So after a visit to my favorite place in AR I washed myself in the water, drank in the sunshine, was blessed by the trees and had a talk with myself and the ancestors. Its in the surrender that the forgiveness and healing can begin. Going with the flow and staying present to what the Creator has around the bend can be frightening but also exhilarating. So now I don't fight the current but celebrate with each cleansing rainfall. I know I am growing just as the landscape around me is green with new growth and the promise of an amazing summer.
